Whether you play online or at the casino, poker is a game of chance. Players are dealt a set of five cards and the goal is to make the best hand possible, using a combination of cards from your hand and the board. The highest-ranking hand wins the pot, which is usually split as evenly as possible.

There are hundreds of ways to play poker, depending on the rules of the game you are playing. A simple game for beginners is five card draw poker.

A basic hand comprises two pairs of cards plus a fifth card. The lowest possible hand is a seven-five-four-three-two. The highest is a three-kings.

A player may bluff, by betting that he has the best hand. If he makes this bet, his opponent cannot add more hero folds. The first player to ante up places money in the pot.

The dealer assigns a value to each chip before the game begins. The chips are usually red or blue. In some games, wild cards are added to the deck. These cards can take any suit.

The player who has the highest card by suit wins the odd chip. The player who has the high card outside of four of a kind breaks ties. When two players tie for the highest hand, the high card wins.

Poker cards are ranked from Ace to Ten. In some games, the Ace is considered the low card. Similarly, some games don’t use suit ranking.
